With today’s job market, it must be quite overwhelming for those just beginning to think about getting out there to find a job – how do you start?
Whether it be a full time job or your first part time job you desire, volunteering at the NSS can help you get there! For those of us who need some of that “experience” every employer seems to look for, the NSS offers all sorts of things to do and try that will help you hone your skills so that you’re ready and on your way.
You might think that the NSS is only for people who play a musical instrument, but it’s for everybody. For instance, have you thought about how skills picked up through volunteering can translate directly into a paying job?...... Skills like: communication (telephone, email, meetings etc), customer service, computers/IT, receptionist duties (bookings, directing calls, taking messages, promoting NSS programs etc), cash handling, manual handling, setting up audio equipment..... You name it.....everything that needs doing at the NSS needs doing in a paying job too!
Imagine if you can add these to your resume and be able to say in an interview that you bring skills to the table that others don’t yet have – it certainly would give you an edge. Keep in mind too that no matter how much or how little time you have to offer, the NSS can always use another willing pair of hands.
